Zanzibar is welcoming and easy to travel, but a handful of local habits make the difference between a smooth trip and a bumpy one.
Money and connectivity
Tanzanian shillings for small purchases, US dollars widely accepted for tours and hotels. Bring cash; card machines are unreliable outside larger hotels.
A local SIM card is inexpensive and gives you data for maps and WhatsApp. Your driver can stop at a shop on the way from the airport.
Respect and dress
Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim island. Swimwear belongs on the beach; shoulders and knees covered in Stone Town and villages is appreciated.
During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours, and expect restaurants to keep shorter hours.
Health and safety
Drink bottled or filtered water only, use mosquito repellent at dusk, and speak to your doctor about malaria prophylaxis before travelling.
The island is generally safe. Use a pre-booked driver at night rather than hailing on the street, and keep valuables in the hotel safe.
