Nungwi sits at the very northern tip of the island, and it is the longest common transfer from the airport. Knowing what the drive involves makes the arrival far less daunting.
The route
The drive follows the main road north past Stone Town, through Mahonda and the clove-growing villages, before the final run through Nungwi village to the hotels along the beach.
Expect 75–90 minutes door to door. Late-afternoon arrivals can run longer; early mornings are quick and quiet.
Night arrivals
Several European flights land after dark. Village roads have no street lighting, pedestrians and bicycles share the tarmac, and hotel entrances are easy to miss.
This is the part of the trip where a driver who has done the road for years is worth far more than a small saving on the fare.
What the price should include

Ask about a return transfer at the same time. Booking both directions with the same driver usually earns a better combined rate and means someone already knows your hotel.
