Zanzibar airport taxi: everything to know before you land

Most visitors arrive in Zanzibar tired, warm and carrying more luggage than they planned. A pre-booked taxi removes the one step that most often goes wrong: getting from the terminal to your hotel calmly and for a price agreed in advance.
Where your driver waits
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is small, and arrivals empty straight into an open forecourt. A pre-booked driver stands just past the exit doors with a name board, so there is no negotiating at the curb and no walking into the taxi queue with your bags.
Send your flight number when you book. If your flight is delayed, the driver tracks the arrival time and waits — you are not charged for the delay and you do not need mobile data to reach anyone.
How long transfers take
Stone Town is 15–20 minutes from the airport. The east coast beaches — Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi — run 50–70 minutes. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north are usually 75–90 minutes, longer if you land during the late-afternoon school and market traffic around Mahonda.
Road surfaces are good on the main routes and slower on the final sand-and-gravel stretches into beach hotels, which is why an experienced local driver matters more than raw distance.
Agreeing the fare before you travel
Zanzibar taxis are not metered. The fare is agreed before the trip, which is fine when you book ahead and awkward when you are negotiating in the heat with a queue behind you.
Booking in advance locks a fixed price for the whole car — not per person — including luggage, air conditioning and waiting time. Ask for the price in writing on WhatsApp so there is nothing to discuss when you arrive.
