Taxi pricing in Zanzibar confuses many first-time visitors, because there is no meter and quotes vary widely between drivers for the same journey.
Why there is no meter
Fares are set by agreement, based on distance, road condition, time of day and vehicle size. A quote for a private air-conditioned car with a professional driver is not comparable to a shared minibus.
A fair quote is specific: it names the route, the vehicle, the number of passengers, and what happens if your plans change.
What raises a price legitimately
Night pickups, very early departures, large luggage loads needing a bigger vehicle, extra stops, and long waiting periods all add real cost.
What should not change is the number you were quoted before the trip. Agree it in writing and the conversation is over.
Paying
Cash in Tanzanian shillings or US dollars is standard; carry small notes, as change is not always available. Some drivers accept mobile money.
Confirm the payment method when you book so nobody is searching for an ATM at the end of a long day.
