The Spice Islands earned the name honestly. A farm visit is the one stop that explains why Zanzibar mattered to the world long before its beaches did.
What you actually see
A guide walks you between plants, cutting and crushing leaves, bark and roots for you to smell: clove, cardamom, lemongrass, turmeric, vanilla, black pepper.
Most farms end with seasonal fruit tasting and often a cooked Swahili lunch of pilau or coconut curry.
How long, and with what
Budget 90 minutes to two hours. The farms sit inland between Stone Town and the north, which makes the visit an easy pairing with either.
Wear closed shoes and bring insect repellent — the ground is uneven and shaded.
Buying spices
Prices at the farm are fair and the product is fresher than the market. Vanilla pods and clove oil travel well.
Pay in small notes and buy at the end, not the start, so you are not carrying packets through the tour.
