Zanzibar's beaches differ enormously, mostly because of the tide. Choosing the wrong coast for your plans is the most common trip-planning mistake here.
North: Nungwi and Kendwa
Deep water at all tides, so swimming is possible all day. The liveliest area for bars, restaurants and boat trips.
Roughly 75–90 minutes from the airport. Busy in high season.
East: Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu
Vast white beaches with a dramatic tide that pulls the water far out, exposing seaweed farms and flats. Paje is the kitesurfing capital.
Quieter, better value, and 50–70 minutes from the airport. Check tide times if swimming matters to you.
Southwest and Michamvi
Kizimkazi for dolphins and quiet, Michamvi for sunsets over the water — unusual on the east side of an island.
