Stone Town rewards slowness. A UNESCO World Heritage site of coral-stone houses and carved doors, it is best seen early and late, with the hottest hours spent indoors.
Early morning
Begin at the seafront by the Old Fort before the tour groups arrive. The light on the coral walls is at its best and the alleys are still quiet.
Walk inland to the Anglican cathedral and the slave market memorial — sobering, essential and easier to absorb without crowds.
Midday
Escape the heat in a rooftop café or the Old Dispensary. The Darajani market is intense but worth thirty minutes for the spice and fish halls.
This is also the right time for shopping: kanga cloth, carved chests, and spices sold by weight.
Sunset
Forodhani Gardens fills with food stalls as the sun drops, and local boys dive from the sea wall. It is touristy and entirely worth it.
Have your driver collect you from a named corner rather than the gardens themselves — the waterfront is closed to cars at busy hours.
