Jozani is the last significant patch of indigenous forest on the island and the only home of the Zanzibar red colobus monkey.
What to expect
A park ranger leads a short forest walk to the troops, which are habituated and often feed at eye level a few metres away.
A raised boardwalk continues through the mangrove swamp — quiet, shaded and good for photographs.
Timing
Early morning and late afternoon are the most active hours and the coolest. The whole visit takes about an hour.
Do not touch or feed the monkeys; staying a few metres back is both the rule and the best way to watch them behave naturally.
Combining the trip
Jozani sits on the road between Stone Town and the east coast, so it costs almost no extra driving on a transfer day.
Mention it when you book your airport transfer and it can be added as a stop rather than a separate excursion.
